2 large potatoes (Russet is ideal)

2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter

Salt to taste

Black pepper to taste

Optional: garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika for seasoning

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

1. Peel the potatoes and rinse them under cold water.

2. Grate the potatoes using a box grater.

Step 2: Remove Excess Moisture

1. Place the grated potatoes in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth.

2. Squeeze out as much moisture as possible. This step is crucial for crispy hash browns.

Step 3: Season the Potatoes

1. Transfer the dried grated potatoes to a bowl.

2. Add salt, black pepper, and any optional seasonings you prefer. Mix well.

Step 4: Heat the Pan

1. Heat a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat.

2. Add 1 tablespoon of oil or butter and let it melt.

Step 5: Cook the Hash Browns

1. Spread the grated potatoes evenly in the skillet.

2. Press them down gently using a spatula to form a thin layer.

3. Cook for 4–5 minutes or until the bottom turns golden brown and crispy.

Step 6: Flip and Cook the Other Side

1. Carefully flip the hash browns using a spatula.

2. Add another tablespoon of oil or butter if needed.

3. Cook the other side for another 4–5 minutes until golden and crispy.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

1. Remove the hash browns from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

2. Serve hot with ketchup, sour cream, or your favorite dip.
