 Grits Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup stone-ground grits (or quick-cooking grits)

4 cups water (or a mix of water and milk for creaminess)

½ teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons butter

¼ cup grated cheese (optional, for cheesy grits)

Black pepper (to taste)

Step 1: Prepare the Liquid Base

1. In a medium saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.

2. Add the salt to the boiling water to enhance the flavor.

Step 2: Add the Grits

1. Gradually whisk the grits into the boiling water to prevent clumping.

2. Lower the heat to medium-low and allow the grits to simmer.

Step 3: Cook the Grits

1. Stir frequently to avoid sticking to the bottom of the pan.

2. Cook for 15–20 minutes (or according to package instructions), until the grits are thick and creamy.

Step 4: Add Butter and Flavorings

1. Stir in the butter for richness.

2. If desired, add grated cheese for a cheesy flavor and mix until melted.

3. Season with black pepper to taste.

Step 5: Serve

1. Spoon the grits into serving bowls.

2. Garnish with an extra pat of butter or a sprinkle of cheese.

3. Serve hot as a side dish or a base for savory toppings like shrimp or vegetables.
